Qlockwork tracks your time and attention and store it in Outlook.

Yesterday, TechCrunch UK wrote about a new software add-in for MS Outlook which tracks your time and attention data to help you control and measure your time more effectively.

Unlike timer based systems, once installed, Qlockwork automatically records how you spend every 5 minutes of your day, so you don’t need to remember to start timers. Qlockwork works in the background to track almost all Windows applications including: MS Office, Internet Explorer, Firefox, MSN Messenger, Skype and many more.
...
Soon there will be a Qlockwork:Team which pulls together your team’s individual activity logs to give you a view of your overall project and where time is being spent.

How to Avoid Back to Work Stress After Your Holidays

By Mike Seddon

Why isn’t there a magic cure for post holiday stress?

Have you just returned back to the office and already you need another holiday?

It doesn’t have to be like this. Every year many of us return to our offices after a relaxing holiday only to be completely stressed out within the first few days.

While there isn’t a magic cure for this common aliment, there are some positive things you can do to make you return to work as stress free as possible.

1. Take control of your diary.

On your first day back the last thing you need is a long list of meetings on subjects you have long forgotten about or are just not upto speed on. Many people will be queuing with their urgent problems ready to drop onto your desk. Do NOT let them. Before you go on holiday book time on your first day back with key people you want to see and also book time to catch up on emails, voice messages etc.

2. Prioritise those emails!

Don’t try to read every email on your first day back. Try to sort them into priority order. For instance sort them based on emails you were sent rather than those you were just copied on. You could also sort them by the name of the person sending the email and then read the emails from those people most important to you first.

3. Don’t rush to take it all back

Don’t be in a hurry to take back all the tasks you handed over when you went on holiday. Only take the important tasks back on day one and aim to take all the remaining tasks back over the first two or three days.

4. Take a break

Give yourself some free time to relax on your first few days back. Take a full lunch, take a coffee break or even go for a walk. Do anything that will allow you to switch off for a few precious moments.

5. Never work late on your first day back

Do not get trapped by those guilt feelings at all the work you have not been doing and try to catch up by working late on your first day back. This is a sure way to raise your stress levels.

6. and finally

Plan your next holiday to give you something to look forward to.

Holiday Gifts For Employees

As the holidays are quickly approaching, it is time to start thinking about employee gifts. If your company participates in gift giving, the New York Enterprise Report has a nice list of gift ideas for all budgets.
Did you know that when you calculate all the costs involved in recruiting, interviewing and hiring, it can cost $3,500 to replace one $8-anhour employee? For salaried employees from assistants to specialists, the cost soars to anywhere from 30% to 200% of their annual salaries. It pays to keep your hardworking employees happy.

How Interruptions Destroy Your Work Flow

It used to be the case that if someone wanted to interrupt you, they required the courage to do so in person, by telephone or by letter.

Emailing, texting, mobile phones, voicemails, pagers, etc give us a great plethora of options to get in touch. If response from any of these is slow the sender will often try a second method, and wonder why the first did not work.

A study that watched a dozen information workers for three days, and noted how many times they were distracted, and for how long. The study found that on average, they archieved only 3 continuous minutes of work before being diverted from it (University of California at Irvine study - see http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/16/magazine/16guru.html?ei=5088&en=2864cc65d74cefb8&ex=1287115200&pagewanted=all).

“Each employee spent only 11 minutes on any given project before being interrupted and whisked off to do something else. What’s more, each 11-minute project was itself fragmented into even shorter three-minute tasks, like answering e-mail messages, reading a Web page or working on a spreadsheet. And each time a worker was distracted from a task, it would take, on average, 25 minutes to return to that task. To perform an office job today, it seems, your attention must skip like a stone across water all day long, touching down only periodically.” Gloria Mark, researcher.

How To Build A Good Board

Fred Wilson, a VC in NYC, has a good list of 12 items that make a good company board. If you sit on a board or run a company of your own, this is a good article to read.
Keep your board to seven members or less. Five is ideal in my experience but sometimes you need seven to get the right diversity. Two insiders, one to three VCs, and one to two industry people is ideal once the company gets to a certain scale.

Noah Didn't Wait For His Ship To Come In - He Built One

By John L. Mason

Seize the moment! "Miracles are coming by you or to you every day" (Oral Roberts). Today was once the future from which you expected so much in the past. Live for today.

Don't let what you have within your grasp today be missed entirely because only the future intrigued you and the past disheartened you. Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.

When can you live if not now? All the answers of tomorrow are in the seeds of today. The future that you long and dream for begins today. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year."

The Bible says, "Lord, teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom" (Ps. 90:12). Marie Edgeworth said, "There is no moment like the present. The man who will not execute his resolutions when they are fresh on him can have no hope from them afterwards; for they will be dissipated, lost, and perished in the hurry and scurry of the world, or sunk in the slough of indolence."

The regrets that most people experience in life come from failing to act when having an opportunity. Today, well lived, will prepare you for both the opportunities and obstacles of tomorrow.

Few know when to rise to the occasion. Most only know when to sit. Many spend too much time dreaming of the future, never realizing that a little of it arrives every day. I agree with Jonathan Swift when he said, "May you live all the days of your life."

Know the real value of today.

5 Minutes To A Better Nights Sleep

The other night I woke up with my mind going a million miles an hour. I got up and spent five minutes writing down everything that was on my mind. All the worries and tasks. I also wrote down the appointment that had come to mind along with the great idea for a blog post. I went back to bed and Viola… I was asleep in 5 minutes. Somehow writing all these things down really worked.

This excerpt is from the Success Begins Today blog, which has an interesting article on what keeps us awake at night. Most of the time, it is our thoughts, worries and to-dos.

We have all heard that we should write everything down as we think of it, and get it out of our heads. Success Begins Today has some good advice and has created a nice template which helps capture all of those the thoughts.

PRICE OF (NOT) TRAINING

By: Dr. Donald E. Wetmore

As a full-time Professional Speaker for the last twenty years, I have been asked so many times, "How much does your training cost?" I have learned to reply, "Would free be too much?"

Training is not a cost. It's an investment. It really doesn't matter what we pay for an investment. What's relevant is what we get in return. One of the best ways to jeopardize an organization's future in today's world and increase the probability of troubled times is to look at training as a cost and pay the price of not training or provide substandard training that operates only as a Band-Aid for the training requirements.

It's a simple principle. An organization's staff is where they are currently, in terms of competence and success, in direct relationship to what they know and how well they apply what they know. We all come into this world the same way, broke and naked. (And we all leave the same way: broke, they give us some clothes.) We knew how to do nothing when we arrived but then we learned. The more we learned and knew and the more we applied what we knew, the greater our success and thereby, the organization's success has been.

Some like to quantify the results from training. Here's a good example. A person being paid $50,000 per year who is wasting just one hour per day is costing the organization $6,250 per year (excluding benefits, overhead, opportunity costs, etc.). If, for example, through one of our Time Management Seminars, that person can learn how to re-capture just one hour per day, that translates into a payback to the organization of $6,250 per year. If there is a group of 25 people involved in the same training and they all receive a similar benefit, the return to the organization is $156,250 per year. (And this does not include other benefits to the organization such as profitability, reduced turnover, improved morale, enhanced teamwork, better customer service, greater creativity, etc.) Over five years, the payback is $781,250. What should an organization invest to achieve that return and payback?

Many find it difficult to get the time for training. This is another false economy. (They are so busy doing it the wrong way that they cannot take out a little time to figure out how to do it the right way.) When someone says they cannot afford to take three days out of their next week for training, I know they are looking at training as an "expense", and not as an "investment". Three days out of five is 60% of the week and that would be a big expense. But three days out 365 is a drop in the bucket and if that investment provides just one idea that saves one hour per day, every day, the payback on the investment of three days is over 250 hours just in the next year.

Not so many years ago training, beyond showing employees the basics of doing the job, was an option for most organizations. Today it is no longer an option. If any of us continues to do what we do the same way, within five years most of us and our organizations will become obsolete. Why? Because our competitors are helping their people to become more effective through training. If we look closely at companies that are doing well in the long run, they almost always have in place a well thought out and executed training program for their people. They understand that the price for not training is the real expense of training.

Innovation = Success!

By Jeffery S. Miller

Many people often fear innovation. They fail to recognize the key to success is not doing the same old thing over again, but it's trying something new. When you are trying something for the first time, it will seem foreign. Some people may scoff and make fun of you. Don't let that get to you. You'll be the one who makes it to the top!

When something new comes along, people are hesitant to jump on the bandwagon. Fads come and go, so they have the right to feel that way. You don't want your product or idea to be a flash in the pan. There's no way to garauntee that your idea will be the next billion dollar idea. Don't let that be grounds for you to dimiss your idea to the wayside. You will have to take the big step to get the public to know what you have to offer them.

I always believed Innovation=Success. I will believe that until my dying day, or until someone proves me differently. If you have the same product everyone else has, there's no reason for them to come to you. You have to offer the public something they have never seen before. There will be resistance, but that's natural. Some people will not be better off because of your product, and that's ok. You can't win everyone.

When you do advance to the step of creating public interest in your idea or product, let them know what they have now and how you're making it better. Don't worry if they mock the idea. They will be wanting to use the idea later. If the idea catches on, they will be bragging that they have talked to the inventor of the product. People can be strange. That's just the way the world works. Everyone is unique in their own perspectives. We wouldn't want everyone to be the same, or you wouldn't have a chance of getting your product out on the market.

If you're not the innovative type, it will require a change in the way of your thinking. Creativity comes from problem solving. Practice solving unique problems, and look for answers that you think will solve the dilemma. Your product won't necessairlly come from the question that you answered, but it will open up a new horizon for you to think. If you don't come away with anything else, just remember Innovation=Success!

The Best Time To Buy Airline Tickets

The Consumerist website posted an article on Buy[ing] Flight Tickets at Midnight.

This article created quite a stir, and Rick Seaney of FareCompare.com replied to the article with a very informative response on when is the best time to buy tickets?

The purchase of air travel consists of 3 major components (1) fares, (2) flight schedules and (3) inventory. ALL three things must be in alignment to get the very best deal. For this particular discussion I will limit my comments to U.S. and Canadian travel (International travel has a completely different set of issues). Let's start with a brief background of these 3 components...

Double Your Profits with Business Coaching

By Kris Koonar

Business as we all know, involves risk. Since starting up your own business means starting a new chapter of your life, you may fail to recognize a few shortcomings in your business plans, as you are too engrossed and feel that things are going great. However, it is very essential to have an outsiders view on the simplest of things, as they will assess your business as any other business and will come out with views that you may have not realized. To be precise, it is advisable that you appoint a business coach who would keep you on track and help keep you a step ahead of the competition.

It is very important to keep learning every day in order to ensure growth. Business owners around the world may not have sufficient time to keep an eye on what is happening in the global business scenario. They may not even get time to keep up with their own company so in times like this the role of a business coach becomes all the more valuable. Business coaching may prove to be very fruitful for your business, as your business coach will be someone who will hold you accountable, someone who will keep you on your heels by pushing you and providing the precise information needed at the right time.

A proper business motivation is necessary to ensure profitable operation. It is the core of any business activity and your business coach ensures that you complete this stage. Since your business coach can help you create a business plan before starting up your business or even a marketing plan later, this will give the business owner a clear picture of what needs to be done in order to revive their business and help them double their profits.

Business coaching can be a great help before you start a business and at any point afterwards. In the initial stage, coaching will help you realize the areas where your interests lie. After you start your venture, business coaching can be a great help in re-injecting the motivation and passion back into your activities. Investing in hiring a business coach can yield rich returns; as they can help to increase sales by training the sales staff. They can identify the target market for your business and help in hiring the best people and motivate them to increase productivity. Your business coach can also prove to be a great asset for your company in the field of customer service, as they can help you keep your customers satisfied and loyal to your company. This will result in the doubling of your profits, as satisfied customers keep coming back, while new customers are referred by existing customers.

A professional business coach will work with you like a personal adviser to help you realize your goals in a clear manner and help your business reach its full potential. So if you are planning to double your profits, you need to have specific goals in mind because everyone wants to earn more than they invest.
